ABOUT

Hobby Weed is about growing weed as a hobby in California, where every home is now allowed six plants.

Bottom line: We'll provide you with a complete kit to grow your own dwarf variety of marijuana scientifically, and all you have to do is water and keep the lights pointed at it. It'll fit on your kitchen table if you like, and become a great conversational piece. It'll take 2 to 3 months to grow, and will yield from 1 to 4 ounces of dried and potent pot, from varieties designed for pain reduction and as a sleep aid. Our varieties are also selected to be 100% female and automatically produce flowers as they mature, eliminating the tricky lighting schedules and temperature manipulation needed by other types. And these special seeds are provided to you for free (as per CA law).

For $75 you get $250 to $1000 in pot. And it's organic, vegan (the special soil), and pesticide free.

It makes a great gift for Grandma too!

Why grow it?: Because your mom told you not to, but now it's legal.

Why grow indoors?

Indoors you get year round growing. You don't have to rush home due to sudden weather changes. You don't have to worry about kids going into your yard to follow a stray baseball. You don't have to constantly pick off the caterpillars dropped on your plants by moths. Those little guys love to eat the buds!

And despite your best efforts at caterpillar removal, some are likely to ooze out of your harvested pot as it dries. Even worse, some won't ooze out...

But the dangers to outdoor pot don't come only from above. Termites will eat your pot from below, starting with the roots. Rollie pollie pill bugs will eat holes in the young plants. Snails and slugs will leave their mark too. Gnats and viruses will attack the roots. Even white flies like to lay eggs on pot leaves.

Better to stay indoors with your screen door very tightly closed, where you get privacy. There's also less worry about whether the Meterman is a stoner. And remember the last time your gardener decided to prune a bush without asking you, cropping it down to nearly nothing?

Indoors you can be assured of the easiest conditions for growing weed when you use our kit, because we've worked out all the bugs! We've even selected special varieties of pot for you, which don't require tricky manipulation to get buds.

What do you get?

  • A 1 gallon kit using a special soil formula developed by HobbyWeed, gleaned from all the experience of pot growers on the net, and analyzed by top notch computer nerds. We've designed this as a hobby kit, which gives a casual grower the advantage. The container itself keeps the roots where they belong and prevents over watering which leads to root rot.
  • The top recommended germination cube, implanted in the center of the special soil, with slow release fertilizer and micro nutrients layered below it.
  • Two LED lights of sufficient intensity to grow your plant to her typical size, and designed to cost no more than $15 in electricity to bring the plant to harvest time.
  • Until someone tells us otherwise, we give you two free autoflowering, feminized seeds to get you started! You can pick your choice of available seeds at checkout. (No purchase necessary, the seeds are free). You'll be seeing the start of buds in just a few weeks! Shown to the right is the famous LowRyder #2.
  • You can order refill kits for half price, so that you can grow another variety using the lights you already have.

In The News

When will it take effect?

Adult use sales of marijuana will begin Jan. 1, 2018, but consuming and growing marijuana became legal as of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. And you can grow it!

What are the restrictions for recreational marijuana?

In general, the law for recreational pot treats cannabis similar to alcohol. Consumption is limited to people 21 or older and forbidden in most public spaces. Pot will be highly regulated and heavily taxed (but tax free to grow at home).

Where is recreational marijuana already legal?

Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington state and the District of Columbia. When California voted "yes," recreational cannabis became legal along the entire West Coast, giving the legalization movement powerful momentum. That will spark similar efforts in other states and put pressure on federal authorities to ease longstanding rules that classify marijuana as a dangerously addictive drug with no medical benefits.

How much marijuana can you have?

Proposition 64 allows California residents 21 and older to legally possess up to an ounce of weed and grow six marijuana plants at home. Oddly, under ideal conditions, 6 plants can yield as much as a pound of dried marijuana. And the conditions in California are in fact ideal, for a good portion of the year.

So how is that conflict between 1 ounce and 1 pound solved? You just have to keep the dried pot at home. Don't take it for a walk more than 1 ounce at a time!

Grow Your 6, It's the LAW!

Here’s the text of Proposition 64 relating to home cultivation:

11362.2. (a) Personal cultivation of marijuana under paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) a/Section 11362.1 is subject to the following restrictions:

(1) A person shall plant, cultivate, harvest, dry, or process plants in accordance with local ordinances, if any, adopted in accordance with subdivision (b) of this section.

(2) The living plants and any marijuana produced by the plants in excess of 28.5 grams are kept within the person’s private residence, or upon the grounds of that private residence (e.g., in an outdoor garden area), are in a locked space, and are not visible by normal unaided vision from a public place.

(3) Not more than six living plants may be planted, cultivated, harvested, dried, or processed within a single private residence, or upon the grounds of that private residence, at one time. (b)(l) A city, county, or city and county may enact and enforce reasonable regulations to reasonably regulate the actions and conduct in paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) of Section 11362.1. (2) Notwithstanding paragraph (1), no city, county, or city and county may completely prohibit persons engaging in the actions and conduct under paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) of Section 11362.1 inside a private residence, or inside an accessory structure to a private residence located upon the grounds of a private residence that is fully enclosed and secure. (3) Notwithstanding paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) of Section 113 62.1, a city, county, or city and county may completely prohibit persons from engaging in actions and conduct under paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) of Section 11362.1 outdoors upon the grounds of a private residence.

(4) Paragraph (3) of this subdivision shall become inoperable upon a determination by the California Attorney General that nonmedical use of marijuana is lawful in the State of California under federal law, and an act taken by a city, county, or city and county under paragraph (3) shall be deemed repealed upon the date of such determination by the California Attorney General.

(5) For purposes of this section, ”private residence” means a house, an apartment unit, a mobile home, or other similar dwelling.

Here are some notes about what to consider

Studying How to do it - 12/11/2016

1. the seed variety - some website say we should be using indica, which will yield smaller plants. Sativa plants grow bigger!

It looks like Indica leaf blades are bigger and fatter. Sativa leaves are skinner...

2. whether the plants are grown from seeds or clones - I really don't the difference, I will need to do more research!

3. after how many days of growing the plants are put into flowering, and - I guess we will find out soon when I plant the first one.

4. the optimization of the climatic conditions of the grow-room. - I think it should be fine, just gonna wing it the first time around

Indica vs Sativa

Hybrid: What’s the Difference Between Cannabis Types?

Pot growing facts:

Growth period is 2-10 months based on strain, but safe to use 3 months for most. An excellent plant and condition can produce up to a pound per plant. The law says 6 plants, it doesn't specify a limit on weight. However, 600W can yield up to 1.3 pounds (ideal and unlikely), so it's reasonable to set up your 6 plants with just 600W of HID. Cost per month will be $128.

One kWh (over Tier 1 which gets used up), costs 23 cents. If Tier 3 reached, 29 cents. Max cost per watt hour: .00029, day: .0070, month(@30): .21. 600 watt for a month: $125

Fluorescent lights grow .25g / watt. 600 yields 150g. Cost @3 months is $375. Doesn't penetrate far enough down, so only good for short plants.

HID lights get best yield per watt. 1g / watt. But they are hot. 600W would be a hot booth, and need active ventilation. Also need extra parts, they aren't just bulbs. Yield could be 600g under ideal conditions. Web page says $128 per month @600W, with 2.5-5 oz yield per month.

LED lights: .5g / watt. Cooler than HID. If have fan of their own, no venting needed for <300W.

Germinating: Rapid Rooters germination cubes.

Short pot seed varieties: 2.5 feet high is possible.
